Tidbits of political development with devastating implications - K.I.
Amid the growing discontent and call for Gloria to step down after a devastating testimony of the Jun Lozada linking his husband to the ZTE-NBN deal, changing the constitution had again been revived to serve as a leeway to divert people’s attention. Friday had been called by Filipinos for Gloria to step down. Instead of Ignacio taking the cudgels to openly take a spin on the issue it is now Ermita in the frontlines clarifying the charter change. Defensive has the government is now, his statement further confirms its intent.
The month of February is a month of protests. I do not know what is it in February that makes this month special when it comes to protests aside from celebrating Valentines day, but this month seems always a month wherein protest actions have been successful in booting tyrant president’s out from the palace.
Obama has again won the preliminaries in Potomac, Maryland and Virginia. This young Senator captures the imagination of middle class Americans here in the US. He passionately is clear about his direction and political call. He will for sure make some difference when he will be President among immigrants in the US.
Gloria’s POEA is collecting 8,000 US dollar for each Overseas Contract Workers. She and her government agency had packaged it in a sense that further makes it hard for workers to survive. In this arrangement, each OFW is asked to have 8,000 dollars as a bond for repatriation. In other words just like renting an apartment, the government is asking for a deposit. This huge amount of course is pure money making for the government. This had been an ticklish issue for the OFWs aside from the fact they are now experiencing the effect of Gloria’s policy to further squeeze their blood by lowering down the Peso to dollar exchange rate. In a country like the Philippines wherein the economy survive due to foreign remittances, such policy profits the government. Of course this is done inorder to pay off the foreign monetary loan obligations. With no money at all, what Gloria does is to float bonds which later Filipino generations will pay.
So with the impending winning of Barack Obama as the next US President, the ruling classes represented by Gloria are now careful and silent in identifying themselves to Bush. Gloria is fond of mimicking Bush policies. During Clinton’s presidency she had flaunted her claim being classmates. When Barack will win, she will have her new take.
There is a seeming convergence of middle classes calling for Gloria’s stepping down. You have the Makati Business Club. Then you have the IBP and of course the church now calling for communal action.
