An activist group said on Wednesday that up to 2.7 million votes may have been padded in the ongoing canvass of votes by the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), ABS-CBN News learned Wednesday.
Kabataan party-list group said the padded votes may be used to increase the votes for Team Unity (TU) senatorial candidates and administration-backed party-list groups.
An analyst of the poll watch task force of Kabataan and Genuine Opposition, Dr. Giovanni Tapang, said: "From the current standing in the COMELEC tally, 2.7 million can possibly put out four GO candidates (Aquino, Cayetano, Trillanes and Pimentel) and one independent (Honasan) out of the race."
The group said six TU candidates that can be catapulted to the winning circle are Zubiri, Recto, Defensor, Pichay, Montano and Sotto.
The group said it uncovered the data through a check of completed city and provincial certificates of canvass against the official COMELEC canvass. Its study revealed that the poll body’s canvass showed a "73.4 percent voter turnout in 45 provinces which is 4.42 percent higher than the Pulse Asia exit poll of 69 percent. This translates to approximately two million padded votes nationwide and counting."
"What made us suspicious was COMELEC Chairman Benjamin Abalos's premature announcement, a day after the elections, that voter turnout was 75 percent. This may have provided political operators with as much as 2.7 million in cheatable, negotiable votes," said Tapang.
'Unholy alliance' bent on wrecking economic takeoff
Meanwhile, Team Unity, in a statement on Wednesday, lambasted the report of the opposition poll watch task force as "unverified stories of electoral fraud and ghost whistleblowers to muddle the clear mandate of the May 14 mid-term balloting and torpedo a phenomenal, post-election economic take-off that is now electrifying the region."
Eastern Samar Gov. Ben Evardone, TU media director, said the task force’s aim is "to unsettle the Arroyo administration via a media offensive geared to discredit the electoral process and plant the seeds of mistrust against the President and the outcome of the just-concluded elections."
Evardone said the measures that are being undertaken by the "unholy alliance" are attempts to cast a shadow on the "overwhelming victory by administration candidates in the congressional and local elections that was … a vote of confidence in the President and her '8 by '08' agenda of social payback and the clear evidence of this are harsh realities the opposition cannot accept."
The TU media director said 72 of the 73 governors-elect proclaimed by the COMELEC all belong to the administration coalition and 171 proclaimed winners in the congressional elections are members of parties belonging to the administration coalition.
The TU statement said the congressional elections’ results made the pro-administration coalition "bigger and stronger and with numbers enough to readily crush any impeachment resolution against the President in the chamber."
"So the mainstream opposition and its leftist and ultra-rightist allies have come to realize that they have to spoil the party of the nation and carry out even the most extreme effort just to sabotage or subvert these awesome gains and, hopefully, topple the Arroyo presidency," Evardone added.

It is a contest of the ruling classes inorder to maintain their political power because political power begets economic power. However while true, this event is taken advantaged by the people's movement in the hope to further arouse, organize and mobilize the masses.
